The Challenge:

Newcastle City Council (NCC) required a fully rugged, exceptionally robust, Android tablet computer to withstand the rigours of being mounted on their fleet of grass cutter vehicles. The tablets needed to withstand all weathers, while running their mowing tracking application and MS InTune.

Objectives:

To select a robust Android tablet with 10" display
RUGGED MOBILE Systems (RMS) assisted NCC in selecting a tablet robust enough to withstand a high shock/vibration environment, exposure to wet & dusty conditions.  Getac also offer excellent ongoing support with long term OS and security patch support, plus a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty that covers accidental damage.

To devise a mounting solution to allow tablet to be held securely on Grass Cutters
RMS helped design a flexible, extremely robust RAM Mount solution for bolting to the metal work at front of grass cutter vehicle. This needed to be strong enough to hold the weight of tablet and cradle and allow the user to adjust to position to suit them.

To provide long enough battery life to avoid charging on vehicle via a high capacity user replaceable battery
NCC also have spare batteries which when charged using the external multi-bay charger allow batteries to be swapped in the field where required.

Solution:

The Getac ZX10 Android fully-rugged tablet with removable tablet protective cover

  • Offering: 10.1" TFT LCD sunlight readable, capacitive touch display, Octa-core processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC Storage, GPS & 4G LTE, running Android 12 (supported to 13 or 14) with AER

  • With dual hot-swappable high capacity batteries to cover 8hr shifts

  • Manufactured rugged down to the chassis, with MIL-STD810H certification, 1.8m drop resistance, ingress protection rating IP66 for full dust & resistance to jets of water, operating temp -29 °C to +63 °C

Use of RAM Mount parts with Gamber & Johnson Tablet cradle

  • The Gamber-Johnson universal tablet passive cradle holds the ZX10 securely to the grass cutter via RAM Mount ratchet vertical base that is bolted to the metalwork of grass cutter chassis.

Outcome:

  • The Getac ZX10 tablet, with protective cover and RAM Mount solution met NCC’s requirement for a fully-rugged Android device that can withstand day to day use on their grass cutters throughout the season.

  • Out of mowing season these Android tablets can be used elsewhere in the council for other data capture activities.

  • RUGGED MOBILE Systems and Getac UK are here to support NCC ongoing with the maintenance of these tablets at NCC.

  • Feedback from NCC has been that the Getac ZX10 solution has been well received by both management and staff.
